Cabinet Office New Accommodation Project
The Cabinet Office New Accommodation Project was commissioned to bring together the
various government department ,spread between various buildings, into a central complex.
The challenge lay in the re-use of existing adjacent buildings rather than the relocation
away from Whitehall. By doing so, the various neglected historic buildings were brought
back to life and given an upgrade, bringing the facilities in line with modern office
standards.
This was achieved with the concept of interlinking the various buildings at the point
of their greatest intersection, a small neglected back alley. A covered courtyard
was introduced, enclosing the alley, which serves as the central hub between all
five buildings. The atrium enclosure includes link bridges at various levels and
new lift cores and stairs. This allows for a free flowing link between the various
buildings, cleverly aligning their differing levels to provide a seamless transition.
The buildings included Admiralty Arch, Ripley Building, Kirkland House, the Old Admiralty
Buildings and the un-used Cinema.
Robert Albanes was the architect responsible for the design of the atrium and entrance
canopy to the Ripley Building courtyard, and the site architect for the first phase
of works commencing with Admiralty Arch.
