National Indoor Sports Arena & Velodrome
The Commonwealth Games Arena & Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, has been designed as the showpiece for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The only completely new sports facility designed for the games provides two distinctly separate arenas under one roof. The arena and velodrome are linked by a connecting building which includes two office floors for the National Sport Federations, along with other ancilliary accommodation including a Health Spa.
Innovations & added value
The team has worked with specialist velodrome and athletics track designers and seating suppliers to create the most effective and flexible solution. Economies have been made in the design by combining public facilities, changing and support facilities, and building services serving the main event spaces.
Effectively four buildings in one, the design strategy is to break down the visual mass of the Building and reflect the internal activities in the exterior form. To start, the basic form of the NISA and Velodrome is simple and rectilinear. Then, the specific individual forms of each facility are carved out of the basic rectilinear form. Walls are curved and the fenestration is located to give the overall form a sense of scale and provide daylight into the interior spaces. The resulting roof overhangs are “punched” with openings, creating areas of shadow and light across the facades that change throughout the day.
